Daniel Farke anticipates a quiet January transfer window as Leeds United continues to contend for the Championship crown. However, it is not impossible that the Whites will change up their defensive lineup.
Max Wober, an Austrian international, is still frequently linked to leaving Elland Road, and worries about Junior Firpo’s long-term future are also mounting. Firpo, a left-back who is presently out due to a hamstring injury, has entered the last year of his contract and will be free to negotiate with clubs outside of the UK starting on January 1.
Ben Godfrey of Atalanta is reportedly a target for the Whites, according to a TBR Football article. The adaptable defender was a target for United during the most recent transfer window, but he spent £11 million to leave Everton for Italy. According to the source, they will only be able to make a play for Godfrey next summer if they are promoted.
Godfrey, who made four substitute appearances during the 2024–2025 season, has had few first-team opportunities since joining the Serie A squad this season. Atalanta is rumored to be considering loan bids for Godfrey, who can play full-back but primarily as a center-back. With manager Gian Piero Gasperini content with a standard three-man defense, they are now two points ahead of everyone else in the table.
A number of Premier League teams, including Wolverhampton Wanderers, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton & Hove Albion, have reportedly expressed interest in Godfrey. Godfrey, who has previously represented England, is reportedly very interested in joining Forest and Brighton during the January transfer window.
Wober, Pascal Struijk, and Joe Rodon are the only three recognized center backs on United’s roster. Farke may try to bolster this area in order to increase their chances of winning promotion.
